TVCWFL D1; Buckingham Athletic Ladies 4-2 Wantage Town Ladies

Buckingham Athletic Ladies – 4
Wantage Town Ladies – 2

Buckingham Athletic Ladies finally got their season up & running on Sunday, claiming their first win of the season over Wantage Town in a game played at Moretonville to protect the Stratford Fields pitch after heavy rain overnight. After a wretched start to the season, and a period where it seemed the team would struggle to carry on, credit to those who have battled over the past few weeks to keep things going, and have now put together a squad to continue in the Thames Valley Counties Women’s Football League.

Wantage took the lead in just the second minute when a goal kick for the hosts was sent back over the blue backline for Kylie West to accelerate after and knock past Dani Roberts, & for the opening ten minutes or so they looked like increasing that lead. But Athletic slowly grew into the game and started creating their own chances & duly equalised on twenty-one minutes when a corner swung in saw skipper Jade Copas & Courtney Crawley both go up to challenge, the ball coming off the head of the latter to tuck inside the back post.

That was the first goal of the season for the home side, and it visibly lifted the whole side and they were ahead just moments later as Wantage struggled to clear in their own penalty area, a screwed clearance landed nicely for Alex Miller just to the right of goal to shoot across keeper Sophie Jones and inside the far post. It was almost three on the half hour when a cross from the left found Danielle Crossley unmarked in front of goal but her header crashed back off the crossbar and away to safety, but the team in green failed to heed the warning as five minutes before the break a long range effort from Miller had Jones at full stretch to push up onto her woodwork but quickest to react was the impressive debutant Cerys Calzaghe who poked home.

Just three minutes after the interval the visitor’s pulled another goal back, from an Ath corner the ball was sent long down the Town right and squared across the eighteen-yard line where Gayatri Patel manged to loop over Dani Roberts and into the back of the net. Any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Crawley bagged her second of the afternoon, played in down the left channel she was met on the edge of the box by a defender however she powered past and when faced one on one with the keeper slotted home to secure the points. F/T: 4-2
