Nathan Hawkins

We asked Nathan:

How was your summer, do you miss football when it finishes or is it nice to just get away from it and relax?

It’s nice to get a break & spend some quality time with my wife & kids but ultimately after a few weeks I miss the routine & then can’t wait to get back to it

Re-signed on for Mursley this summer, what influenced your choice and were there any other clubs that wanted you?

To be honest the break at the end of the season gave me a lot of thinking time, I was invited to pre-season at a couple of clubs which I was contemplating. Last season didn’t go as planned for us in terms of our goals however our pick up in form & our style of play really improved in the last ten games of the season & all of us involved at the club could see us building the foundations for a very strong season this time around. Being first team captain influenced my choice as I enjoy the responsibility whilst having a very good relationship with the gaffer Jamie, and club Captain Jammers; we really want to see if we can take the club to the next level, we feel we have a great bunch of lads & the best squad we have had in years

How do you feel your early season games have gone for you personally so far?

We have started the season well, we picked up a few very good results in pre-season building on the style of play we implemented at the back end of last season & we have carried that through so far this season. Beating last year’s champions Bovingdon in our first game showed us we can be competitive this season, we also kept back to back clean sheets in wins over Totternhoe & Hanslope in the cup which is very important for us. Taking out the game against Old Bradwell last Saturday which we just didn’t turn up for, it has been mostly positive. Personally, I haven’t hit my best form yet, but I am sure I will if I stay fit

What are the expectations and/or targets for the season for you yourself, and the squad as a whole?

Our main aim is to finish minimum top three this season & to have a decent cup run & hopefully pick up a trophy, but ultimately we want to get promoted. Our keeper James Green, our defence & I are targeting a minimum of ten clean sheets. I would also like to chip in with a few goals this season, luckily netting v Hanslope so I’ve already avoided another season fine for not scoring

Who has been your biggest influence in football?

My family have had a big influence due to the time and commitment they put into me playing. My favourite player was Steven Gerrard, a fantastic leader & player

How much belief is there in the squad that you can have a successful season, and which players will be key for you to achieve this?

We have big belief that we can be successful this season and hit our targets! We have a great squad & a great bunch of lads; every single player will be hugely important for us to stick together and achieve our goals. We could do with everyone chipping in with a goal here & there to take the pressure off our main goal scorers. Skelly finding his form from last season is vital for us too & I’m sure he will

Home to Buckingham United this week, do you know anything about them this season & what are you expecting from them?

Obviously they have jumped from North Bucks into the South Midlands league which is great for them & they have had a couple positive results in the last few weeks. I only know one of their lads in Jason Riddell who I played at the Ath, so I look forward to facing him & having a catch up afterwards. We expect it to be a tough match as every game will be this season for different reasons, we try to look at ourselves rather than our opponent’s as that’s all we can control. If we turn up with the right attitude, then the talent we have will hopefully see us win games

Who is the biggest moaner in the dressing room?

Everyone in the squad likes to have a little moan especially when myself & Jammers (Jamie Green) are issuing their fines

What is your typical pre-match routine before you get to the ground?

Saturday mornings for me see me coach my boys under nines team so it can sometimes be quite hectic going from his to my game in the afternoon. I tend to have a little something to eat and chill out watching the early kick-off before getting to the ground

In your current squad, who is the most under rated player in your opinion?

I think we have a few really as most players in the team could easily play at a higher level, we have a lot of potential for that to happen. I wouldn’t say under rated as we know what they can do but our keeper James Green has impressed me since coming into the team, Tom Brazier has bags of potential and has started this season well. Finally, Jammers in his seventeenth senior football season still has enough in the tank yet

Sam Cartwright

Who has the worst dress sense at the club?

By far Sam Cartwright, it would be nice to see him wear some shoes for a start & his collection of shirts are impressive

When you leave the football pitch on a Saturday, what is the first result you look for elsewhere, and why?

Liverpool is the first I look for & the Premier League games in general, gotta check my Super 6! In the clubhouse we always check through our divisions results to see if there’s any surprises! I also follow Buckingham Athletic results as I like to see how they’re getting on

Who is the last person you would let choose the music in the dressing room (or car) on matchday, and why?

Gotta be the Gaffer Jamie, he was banned from the tunes last season!

What’s the one game this season you most want to win and why?

Every game! To achieve what we want to this season every game is equally as important. We look forward to the more local derbies of course but none more than any other. We know the top teams in the division won’t drop too many points, so we need to make sure we don’t either. We have a nice away cup draw coming up down in Essex so that should be a good day out

Finally, after you’ve scored a hattrick on Saturday, what can supporters buy you in the bar afterwards?

A beer would be perfect! But If that was to happen, I think I’d have to buy everyone in the clubhouse a drink, that’s how confident I am it wouldn’t happen ha-ha

Thank you to Sport Shots once again for your great Local coverage!
