Neil Roberts

Ahead of the game Sports Shots caught up with Clinton manager Neil Roberts to ask how he feels the season has started?

So far we’ve played two and we’ve won one lost one. As a squad we were disappointed to lose our opening game against MK Gallacticos, we conceded sloppy goals as a team and if you score three goals in any game of football you don’t expect to lose!! We bounced back though against a very good Tring Corinthians side with a disciplined performance so hopefully we can kick on from that!!

How difficult has it been playing your first game to then having two weeks off, then play again then have three weeks off until this game?

It’s not been easy especially when we were asked when we’d like to start the season! To have a game then miss a week, then game, then two weeks off but that’s life, we now have a continuous run of games so hopefully we can now kick start our season

Which of your games so far have pleased you the most and why?

Tring Corinthians away, disciplined, dug in where we had to, took our chances, and had to cope with our first and ONLY sin bin of the season!!!

How would you describe your start in comparison to what you were expecting from your squad?

It’s hard to tell after two games, we’ve set ourselves goals which we’re confident of achieving so we’ll see how the season pans out over the next couple of months

How have things been in and around the club since you started the season?

There’s been a good atmosphere in and around the club, always has been really as we’ve got a great chairman, and the committee work tirelessly behind the scenes to try and make it as easy as possible for the management team and playing squad at training and on match days

Lamar Mason-Williams joint top scorer after two games

Have you had any problems of players leaving, or have you managed to add any since we last spoke?

No, once you play for Aston you don’t want to play for anyone else! Lol

Which players have impressed you so far and how?

I don’t like to mention individuals, we work hard as a squad, and we win & lose as a squad!

Five of your next six games are away from home, what difficulties does this pose to you?

I only tend to look at what’s happening tomorrow, but it doesn’t bother us as we have to play each team twice anyway, so let’s get on a good run now and maybe we can use home advantage going into the second half of the season!

Tough trip to Codicote this week, come down from the division above, have you had much info on them so far?

Codicote, I don’t even know where that is! Lol no, we just need to know that we need to turn up week in week out, rather than worry about opposition! Niche is causing us a few problems on Friday nights at the moment though!

Finally, any squad / team news ahead of the game?

With holidays now finishing I’m hoping we’ll have a full-strength squad to choose from.

Thanks once again to Sport Shots for your continued support, and coverage of grassroots football, you’re always welcome at Aston Clinton football club

Sports Shots would like to thank Neil for his time this week
