SSMFL; INANE RAMBLINGS FROM UP NORFF 15.08.2019 – South Midlands League update #4

MIDWEEK HEADLINES – TUESDAY 13TH AUGUST AND WEDNESDAY 14TH AUGUST

Wembley’s ‘Twin Towers’ continue to beckon as four more SSML sides advanced in the oldest competition (alright I know it’s now an arch but somehow that does not have the same ring to it).

TUESDAY 13th AUGUST AND WEDNESDAY 14th AUGUST

MIDWEEK HEADLINES

Midweek was not the time to be playing away as all nine SSML travelling clubs were beaten on the road. In Division One those 10p coins were not needed as Shefford Town & Campton’s newly installed floodlights survived the club’s first ever home midweek game under lights. The midweek action brought about 33 goals, an average of 3.66 per game.

13/14 August Stats: 9 games played of which 9 were home wins.

Highest Midweek Attendances: 204 Aylesbury Vale Dynamos v Royal Wotton Bassett Town, 134 Shefford Town & Campton v FC Broxbourne Borough and 133 Arlesey Town v Newmarket Town.

THE EMIRATES FA CUP Extra Preliminary Round

Tring Athletic fell at the first hurdle in the FA Cup as their delayed tie at Burnham saw the SSML club beaten by the odd goal in three. Full result and goalscorers are listed below.

2-1 Burnham v Tring Athletic (Berry, Blount) / (Mitchell) Attendance: 107

THE EMIRATES FA CUP Extra Preliminary Round Replays

For the six SSML sides involved in FA Cup Replays it was to be a happy night for four of them as they booked their place in the Preliminary Round and in doing so banked the £2,250 on offer. All four winning by the narrowest of margins with both Arlesey Town and Aylesbury Vale Dynamos securing solitary goal successes against Newmarket Town and Royal Wootton Bassett Town respectively. North Greenford United saw off visiting Tuffley Rovers 2-1 while Wembley overcame AFC Hayes 3-2. Alas for both Leverstock Green and Eynesbury Rovers it was a case of maybe next year as they exited the competition on their travels, at Ardley United and Wellingborough Town. Full results and goalscorers are listed below.

3-1 Ardley United v Leverstock Green (Joyce, Boyd, Harvey) / (Dodd) Attendance: 66

1-0 Arlesey Town v Newmarket Town (Gaffney) Attendance: 133

1-0 Aylesbury Vale Dynamos v Royal Wotton Bassett Town (Griffiths) Attendance: 204

2-1 North Greenford United v Tuffley Rovers (Clifton [2]) / (Bainbridge) Attendance: 56

4-1 Wellingborough Town v Eynesbury Rovers (Buckby [2], Lowery, Long) / (Brown) Attendance: Unknown

3-2 Wembley v AFC Hayes (Sabti [2], Walker) / (Dennis, Mukasa) Attendance: 71

DIVISION ONE

Nothing beats an evening game under the bright lights and for Shefford Town & Campton Tuesday evening saw the club playing their first ever game under their newly installed floodlights. With a healthy crowd of 134 the SSML new-boys shone as they defeated visiting FC Broxbourne Borough 4-1. Wednesday night saw Wodson Park travelling to Brimsdown, a game that brought about this season’s first humorous tweet “Match day! Slightly later 8.00pm kick off tonight to allow for our long journey across the car park!” It proved that Wodson and fine wine don’t travel well as the hosts ran out comfortable 5-1 winners. Full results and goalscorers (where known) are listed below.

4-1 Shefford Town & Campton v FC Broxbourne Borough (Young [2], Snee, Renney) / (Bowers) Attendance: 134

5-1 Brimsdown v Wodson Park (Unknown) / (Unknown) Attendance: 38

AND FINALLY

The Liver Birds

Wednesday night saw another first in the wonderful game we all love. The Uefa Super Cup Final between Chelsea and Liverpool had three female officials, Stephanie Frappart from France was in the middle and her two assistants were Manuela Nicolosi of Italy and Michelle O’Neill from the Republic of Ireland.
