HCPL D1: Town win historic first-ever Premier League match

Buckingham made a winning start to their first Home Counties Premier League Division 1 season at 2018 runners up Slough on Saturday.

Andrew Hall

Slough won the toss and asked Buckingham to bat first, with openers Callum Price and Leigh Tomlinson making a steady start with an opening stand of 32. Price survived an edge to slip which was adjudged to have fallen short of the fielder before being trapped lbw for 15. Andrew Hall came in at number 3 and dominated a second wicket partnership of 48. Saif Zaib came into the attack and bowled Tomlinson for 23, who was replaced by Jonny Cater. Hall brought up his 50 (58 balls) and again was the main man in a partnership of 61 before Cater was run out for 14. 3 overs later Rishi Sharath picked up the wicket of Hall for 83 which was the first of four wickets for 19 runs which saw Buckingham slip to 176 for 7. Russell White scored a quick 17 from 16 balls at the end as Buckingham reached 199 before being stumped off the final ball of the innings.

Saif Zaib and Nabil Shah (25) made a solid start to the run chase for Slough, putting on 47 and seeing off the opening bowlers. George Humphries came on first change and trapped Zaib lbw in his second over for 26. Skipper Jack Parish came on at the other end, and after conceding 9 in his first over, combined with Humphries to take 4 wickets for 9 runs in 8 overs as they reduced the hosts to 72 for 5. Mohammed Avas and captain Goutham Shrikrishna tried to rebuild the innings, but run scoring wasn’t easy as Humphries completed an excellent spell of 3 for 14 from his 10 overs. The pair added 30 to take the score past 100, but 2 run outs in the same over from Tomlinson and new overseas player Ranitha Liyanarachchi left them seven down and staring at defeat. Sulaiman Akhtar joined his captain and they put on 36 before both falling to consecutive deliveries to Liyanarachchi and Albert Johnson before Liyanarachchi wrapped up the victory as Slough were bowled out for 141.
