Oxfordshire skipper Jonny Cater is keen for his squad to “show what they can do” ahead of their season’s curtain-raiser this weekend.
Cater’s Oxfordshire have named a 14-man squad to travel to play.
The Oxfordshire captain told Sports Shots:
It’s our first game, a chance to get some game-time ahead of the new season and very much an opportunity for the squad to show what they can do.
The two T20 games at the Blackstone Academy Ground sees Oxfordshire name George Sandbach, Will Sutcliffe, Mo Rizvi and Russell White in their squad for the first time.
Sandbach impressed the watching Cater when he made an unbeaten 129 for his club side Oxford Downs in the final of the Bernard Tollett Oxfordshire Cup at Wormsley last September.
George’s century in the cup final was excellent, especially the way he played his innings. He manoeuvred the ball around with his strokeplay and was destructive at the back-end of the Downs innings.
Regarding the other three newcomers, Thame Town’s Will Sutcliffe, Russell White of Buckingham Town and Oxford MCCU’s Mo Rizvi, Cater said:
Will (Sutcliffe) has been knocking on the door with his performances. He has come in and impressed us.
Russell (White) was outstanding for Buckingham last season. He is tall, sharp and gives us something different with the ball.
With Mo’s situation, he expressed an interest in playing and has trained well all winter and impressed us.
Sussex could feature any of their squad, which is a great opportunity for the Oxfordshire side.
In closing, Cater stated:
We do not know who we will face but we must use it as an exercise in being ready for the first competitive game in early May.
