Buckingham United v Twyford United

Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup 1st Round

Lace Hill Sports Centre

K.O. 3.00pm

Buckingham United host Twyford United on Saturday in the first round of the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup, looking to build upon their solid start to the new season that has seen just one defeat in their opening five league games. Sitting third in their new division following promotion last term, the home side will be confident of progressing in the cup with their visitors only tasting success once so far in three league outings.

Conna Sirett

Buckingham have scored twenty-three goals in their five league games to date, whilst Twyford have conceded just seven, so who will continue their trend in this local derby. This week Sports Shots caught up with Conna Sirett to find out his views on how things have started for Buckingham:

So far, we have started well & we are playing good football and everything we have practised or spent time working on during the summer & in training is coming together

After gaining promotion, are there any notable differences between the sides in this league compared to last year?

As a team we don’t pay any attention to the league, current or previous, we focus on the games in front of us and take each week as it comes, we won’t be taking any games lightly regardless of what league we are in

How does Conna feel the squad is equipped for the campaign ahead?

I feel that over pre-season we have brought in some decent talent whilst managing to keep hold of more or less the same players from last year. We have a very good squad and as a team we are now concentrating on playing our football and winning games

Cup business this week-end with the visit of Twyford, how do the team view this game?

We are going into the game anticipating that anything can happen, having played them previously and beating them by nine goals we know what we are capable of. But it’s a new game with a mindset of turning up and playing our football, we won’t be taking them lightly or thinking its an easy win just because of the previous result

We asked what the teams realistic targets are for the season:

I’d say the realistic target is the league, but we are going into every competition with the mentality of winning it

How does the United man feel his own form has been?

I feel that I’ve played well so far, I’ve built upon things the boys and management have said over pre-season, I’m scoring as well as getting assists and we are winning games. I’m enjoying my role on the pitch and the football we are all playing as a team, and definitely look forward to the rest of this season

The only defeat so far was to top of the league Marsh Gibbon, how was that game?

They played to their strengths, they worked hard as a team and exploited the long ball that we on the day couldn’t deal with, & their keeper played really well and stood out for most of the game. We came into the game like we’d already won and had seven or eight players late for the warm up, a really poor attitude and it’s safe to say we all left there very unhappy, a performance & attitude that will not be repeated!

Finally, we asked who Conna think’s will be their biggest rivals in the division:

I think based on last year & what happened, then Bletchley Park would be our rivals, it’s always enjoyable playing them and to be fair to them they’re a good bunch of lads, but we have disposed of them once already and hopefully we can do the same again later in the season

Sports Shots would like to thank Conna for his time this week
