CCL D1; Buckingham Town CC II’s beat Twyford to leave destiny in their own hands

Twyford – 124 all out off 30.4 overs (9 points)

Buckingham Town II’s – 128-8 off 40.2 overs (25 points)

Buckingham Town II’s have found some form just at the right time of the season, as their second successive win on Saturday saw them beat Twyford and the points lifted them out of the dreaded bottom two of the Cherwell Cricket League Division One table. With this season looking likely to see three teams relegated they are still not safe, however their three remaining games see them host Challow & Childrey who are a place below them next week-end, the following week they host Tiddington who are a place above them, and then finish with a trip to Abingdon Vale who are currently three places above them but only by eighteen points. So tight is the division that now Town are just nineteen points off fourth place!

Wasim Fayyaz 7-5-13-3

Town won the toss and put their hosts into bat, Shabaz Alam started well but with the score on 25 Matthew Thatcher made the breakthrough with the wicket of Adam Bone, the batsmen who made 142 in the reverse fixture was removed without scoring. Twelve runs later and James Gear removed Alam and with both openers gone Shahid Mahmood & Ben Elkington put on 20 before Sam Younghusband caught Mahmood off Thatcher, & Albert Johnson removed Elkington and Twyford were 76-4.

Two runs later saw Wasim Fayyaz bowl Atif Ali, and the same bowler then took the wicket of Zabihullah Saeed before Johnson took Mohammed Fayyaz and Town were well on their way. Khurram Khalid then settled his side down as he partnered Jake Duxbury and they added 33 between them before Fayyaz struck again to claim Khalid with his score on 32, leaving Twyford 124-8. At this stage Ben Stafford was called into the attack and within four balls the innings was over, as he removed both Edward Selby Lowndes and then Sam Roberts to match the brace of wickets of Thatcher & Johnson, but the pick of the bowling was Fayyaz as he ended with figures of 3 wickets for just 13 runs off 7 overs, 5 of which were maidens.

Town reached 15 before Alex O’Dell was caught behind off Saeed, but Gurwinder Singh and Sam Younghusband took the score onto 54 before Singh fell to Fayyaz when on twenty-eight. Just 12 runs later Younghusband was trapped LBW by Ali, Simon Myatt was bowled by Fayyaz for 1 and Thatcher was stumped leaving Town 70-5 still needing another fifty-five runs to win. But Thomas Buggey played at the crease for almost an hour and twenty minutes from there, he and captain Steve Beck added 19 before the skipper was caught off Fayyaz, Stafford was trapped LBW by Saeed, and Gear was bowled by the same bowler. Town now needed 24 to win whilst Twyford needed 2 wickets!

Albert Johnson with Thomas Buggey saw game home

A final partnership saw Johnson come in and he & Buggey saw Town home, their paring making 27 to seal the win, Buggey ending 31 not out having played with five different companions at the crease. Saeed & Fayyaz both ending with 3 wickets each, but it was Buckingham who took home the twenty-five points.
