HCPCL D2: Town close in on the league title

Buckingham recorded a convincing victory over struggling Dinton to put themselves on the verge of the Division 2 title on Saturday.

Andrew Hall

After being asked to bat first by their visitors Leigh Tomlinson and Steve Brunning started solidly against the opening bowlers. Tomlinson was the more dominant partner, scoring 35 in a partnership of 67 when the introduction of Akeel Khan trapped him lbw. Ash Pearson joined Brunning (35) and the pair took the score past 100 before both fell in the space of 4 balls to leave the score 101 for 3. Jonny Cater and Andrew Hall began rebuilding the innings, starting slowly and then increasing the run rate in a stand of 77. Hall made 45, and was looking like he would begin to start upping the rate when he fell to an excellent return catch from Waqar Mohammad. Cater fell two overs later for 29 while Mark Hulbert fell to Will Fisher as Buckingham reached 208 for 6 going into the last 5 overs. Jack Parish (26 off 19) and Jack Deal (20 not out off 14) chipped in with some quick runs as Buckingham were bowled out off the final ball for 242.

Russell White

In reply Russell White bowled a fiery opening spell of 3 wickets for 9 runs off 7 overs, while George Humphries chipped in with the wicket of Brennan Gough (well stumped by Jonny Cater standing back when the batsman failed to return to his crease following an appeal) to reduce Dinton to 40 for 4 after the opening spells. Mark Hulbert chipped in with a fifth wicket before Will Sutcliff (23), who was looking in good touch, was run out backing up off a straight drive from his captain. Faisal Ali (24) top scored before being the first of 2 wickets in 2 balls for Jack Deal and Khan chanced his arm at the end, scoring 20 off 21 balls, before Humphries finished off the innings as Dinton were all out for 115.

With Buckingham’s closest two competitors both losing their lead at the top has extended to 42 points, and leaves them within 1 victory in their final 3 games of the title.
