CCLD1; Buckingham Town II’s slip to surprise defeat

Challow & Childrey – 146 all out off 46.4 overs (25 points)

Buckingham Town II’s – 119 all out off 45.2 overs (6 points)

Buckingham Town II’s fell to a surprise defeat on Saturday away at Challow & Childrey despite looking in a healthy position when they bowled out their hosts for 146, and then themselves reached 67-3. But their final seven wickets fell for just 52 runs and were beaten by 27 runs by the team that were bottom and without a win this season, on an afternoon that saw sunshine, cloud, rain, wind and a chill factor not really associated with mid-June.

Two early wickets for Town from Matthew Thatcher & James Gear saw them reduce their hosts to 21-2 but proving difficult to beat was opener Justin Penrose, who almost carried the bat for his team but fell as their ninth wicket after reaching an excellent 72 before being run out by Steve Brunning. Ryan Gordon came in at four to partner Penrose and steady the ship, the pair adding 32 before Gordon fell to Callum Price with the score on 53, further wickets from Gear & two from Price left the home side 80-6.

Mark Foster then rallied alongside Penrose as they added a further 34 runs before Dom Pritchard saw off the new batsman, Joe Harris then partnered Penrose for another 25 runs but was eventually run out as Town toiled to dismiss the Challow tail end, either side of a small delay when both teams were called off due to rain. Penrose finally fell to the run out, leaving Gear to take the final wicket and a target of 147 to win; Gear and Price both ending with 3 wickets each.

Alex O’Dell fell with the score on just 8, but Steve Brunning made a fight of it alongside five different partners starting with Sam Younghusband, their partnership added 19 before Callum Cater came in and alongside Brunning added another 30. Jason Ell made 6 before being caught, Brunning fell for 31, Price fell soon after and Town were suddenly 76-6.

Steve Brunning made 31

Matthew Thatcher & Steve Beck added a further 18 before the former was trapped LBW, and just six runs later Beck was caught with the score just reaching 100. A tall order to reach 47 with two remaining wickets although James Gear made 11 and looked comfortable, but Pritchard was caught on 11 and final wicket Wasim Fayyaz lasted just 5 balls before being bowled to complete the win for Challow & Childrey, Hugh Atkinson taking four wickets for 39 runs was the pick of the bowling, Conor Jones taking 3.
