Great Horwood progressed comfortably into the 3rd round of the National Village Cup on Sunday afternoon (13th May) as they beat Whitchurch by 175 runs.
After losing the toss Horwood were asked to bat first on a green wicket. Openers Stuart Parker and Alex Gilder began in watchful mode as the pitch displayed inconsistent bounce and progressed to 36 without loss after 10 overs. Parker began to dominate the partnership as the run rate increased and they moved the score onto 81 after 23 overs when Gilder was dismissed for a patient but important 27. Dale Armitage joined Parker and they added a further 69 runs together in the next 10 overs as the run rate increased before Armitage was caught for 39. Parker had passed 50 and was joined by Gregg Saunders who hit a brisk 7 but it was Simon Ridgway who hit a quick fire 36 and together with Parker who brought up his 100 they pushed the total up to 231 from their allotted 40 overs. Parker finished unbeaten on 104.
In reply Whitchurch tried to get off to a quick start but 3 early wickets from Robby Taylor put Horwood well on top as he took 3-16. Gregg Saunders picket up a wicket and then youngster Owen Davies bowled superbly as he took 3-8 as wickets tumbled regularly.
Olly Prendergast and Andrew Ellison picked up a wicket each as Whitchurch were bowled out in just 15 overs for 56 to give Horwood a comfortable victory.
Horwood now travel too play Stoke Green on Sunday May 27th in the next round.
