SLD1E; United manager hoping his jewels can shine at Rushden

Saturday 14th April 2018

AFC Rushden & Diamonds v Aylesbury United

Southern League Division One East

Hayden Road

K.O. 3.00pm

Aylesbury United make the trip to Rushden & Diamonds on Saturday in what most would see as a routine top of the table versus mid table home win. However, the home side have not tasted victory since the 10th of March, with four consecutive draws going into this clash, and two defeats previously. On the other hand, Aylesbury United continue their great form under Ben Williams, 11 wins from their last 17 games with just 5 defeats, so this may not be the worst time to be going to Hayden Road. An ideal opportunity for the manager to see how far his side have come this year.

Ahead of the game, Sports Shots spoke with Ben and asked how his squad will prepare for the trip:

We are really looking forward to Saturday but will prepare the same as any other game. A sharp, crisp training session then try and play our normal game

We asked what problems he hopes his side can cause their hosts:

I hope we bring our usual energetic game, & I hope we give them a better game than the last time we met. I think our style of play is different now, and with a few new players we are looking forward to the test

United have won their last two games, against Hayes & Yeading & Thame United, and Ben looked back on both games:

Those two games have produced excellent wins & performances in different ways. We weren’t free flowing against Thame but still managed to score seven, and in truth it could have been a lot more. Against Hayes & Yeading we played some great football in the first half, followed by a real dogged & disciplined second half, and we thoroughly deserved the win, against a team with far greater financial resources than us, and are going for promotion. The players deserve great credit for both wins

Is Ben looking forward to the end of the season, or wish it was a little longer?

We are looking forward to the break, as we are very keen to start the new season!

And finally, what does the summer hold for the manager?

We will be trying to get any player recruitment done early, our training schedule & games are already sorted. I’m then looking forward to taking my girls on holiday, we are visiting Orlando and they cannot wait, and neither can I!

Sports Shots would like to thank Ben for his time this week.
