SSMFL,D1: Resolute Ath display secures competitive derby victory

A resolute display by Buckingham Athletic helped them to a 3-1 victory at Winslow United in a feisty derby where both sides were reduced to ten men this afternoon.

Jack Menday was carried from the field in the opening minutes after a challenge from Ryan Freshwater. The Athletic midfielder was taken to hospital where it has since been revealed he has a broken tibia.

Winslow used every ounce of their attacking power which has ripped many teams apart this campaign as they enjoyed much of the possession in the opposition’s half but the visitors denied any real clear-cut chance.

The Athletic stood firm and defended well, with Nick Bennion displaying good handling, despite the home side’s continual probing.

As the visitors started to come into the game it was Chris Stapleton who headed home a corner to give Mark Carter’s side the lead in the 24th minute.

Seven minutes into the second half Robbie Carter showed pace and strength down the left-hand flank before seeing Ben Acquaye slide in to put the ball into an empty net from just ten yards out to double the Athletic’s advantage.

Winslow’s attacking strength continued to create chances but the Athletic defenders were throwing their bodies at everything, blocking shot after shot.

On 70 minutes Sean Coles latched onto pass from Simon King and rifled an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.

In the celebration that followed, Aaron King picked up a second booking and Winslow were reduced to ten men.

Within two minutes Robbie Carter went through to fire past Brad Kirkwood to put the Athletic 3-1 ahead.

Late on, with the game stretched, Robbie Carter was slipped in again and with Kirkwood racing from the goal, the Athletic striker slid in to try and nick the ball, but his lunge was deemed dangerous and he received a straight red card.

The game petered out with the visitors excellent defending and organisation giving them the platform from which to win the game.
