CS&TFL,D1: Raunds Town 2 Buckingham Town 1

The Robins travelled to fourth placed Raunds Town on Saturday and were edged out in a tight but entertaining match. Buckingham were excellent in the first half and could well have gone in at the break with a comfortable lead as first Chris Wreh and then Murdy Maki had chances in the opening seven minutes but found the home keeper in good form to keep their efforts out. Orlando Joao was in great form too and he fashioned three super crosses that just needed tapping home but no finish was applied. Thrussell in the Buckingham goal was rarely troubled as Towns defence handled everything that was thrown at it and with Judickas and Blair probing from midfield it was Buckingham that were asking all the questions.

The breakthrough came on 27 minutes as the home defence scrambled away another Robins attack the ball fell to Chris Wreh who placed a precise shot high into the net from just inside the penalty area. Buckingham richly deserved the lead after totally dominating the opening half hour but Raunds are a good experienced side who themselves have their sights firmly set on promotion and another goal would have been handy before the break knowing that they would have much more of a say in the second half.

As expected it was a different Raunds that came out for the second half and they took the game to the Robins from the off. The equaliser arrived seven minutes after the restart after a quick break and accurate cross was thumped home at the far post. Buckingham were finding it hard to recapture their first half form and struggled for a spell so it was no surprise when Raunds took the lead although it has to be said it came in fortuitous circumstances. At Towns defence took the sting out of another Raunds raid a backpass to Thrussell was charged down by a home forward as the Buckingham keeper cleared and although the ball could have gone anywhere it fell nicely to the striker who rolled it into an empty net. Going behind focussed the mind of the Buckingham lads and they again began to carve out opportunities with Wreh, Judickas and Osei-Addo all having efforts either saved or blocked while at the other end Thrussell  made three great saves as Raunds exploited the space that was available as Buckingham pushed for the leveller. In the end time ran out for Town and they will feel unlucky as they were certainly worthy of a point, maybe even all three but it is Raunds who leapfrogged them into second spot in the table.
