Grendon Rangers – 0
Quainton – 1
Quainton beat Grendon Rangers on a glorious sunny evening to lift the 45th Saye & Sele Annual Association Football Challenge Cup on Wednesday. A game that created few clear-cut chances was settled by an early own goal, and neither keeper was really tested after that, although the woodwork did take a couple of dents along the way.
A fourth minute left wing cross from Rangers was turned wide by Andy Prescott, and just ninety seconds later Quainton scored when a cross from their right was flicked on by Jack Aris at the front post and past Robin Skilling in the Grendon goal.
Quainton enjoyed some good early possession, and another poorly cleared cross was screwed wide by Rob Springer, and they should have doubled their lead on fourteen minutes when Carl Gunning started a move in midfield and continued his run to meet the returning cross but when in front of goal snatched at his shot, when he probably had a little more time than he realised and could only steer wide.
The visitors then saw Dan Gordon deliver a perfect cross to Gunning right in front of goal but he could only head wide, before a twentieth minute free kick to Grendon was curled straight into Andy Philbey’s gloves by Prescott from outside the box.
Dan Gordon then threated the Grendon goal and a powerful drive into the box saw it take Dean Garrad and Jack Aris to challenge and divert for a corner. Matt Ginger curled a Rangers free kick over the bar, and minutes before the break a Quainton cross flicked the head of Jason Riddell and forced Skilling into a desperate save on his goal line, with the loose ball eventually shielded out of play. H/T: 0-1
Gunning was soon on the attack again for the visitors after the break, turning on the edge of the box but firing wide; Grendon in return fired in a free kick that Matt Ginger rose highest to but headed over. Quainton then won a free kick out on the right, the ball was fed into Gordon just inside the area who blazed over.
Grendon almost grabbed an unlikely equaliser on fifty-six minutes when Raalf Fallaha sent in a looping cross which fooled everyone including Philbey and the ball bounced off the crossbar and was eventually cleared.
Just past the hour mark the woodwork denied the home side again, Prescott received the ball close to goal, he tried an over the shoulder effort only for it to bounced on top of the crossbar and over for a goal kick.
Dean Garrad saw a shot from distance curl over the top for the home side, before their guests almost finished the game when Robert Floutier was inches away from another cross, and a half cleared Grendon corner found Prescott on eighteen yards, but he fired wide. F/T: 0-1
