Great Horwood began their 2017 OCA Division One campaign with a comprehensive 61-run victory over Stonesfield on Saturday thanks mainly to a century from Sam Willett and five wickets from Josh Nix.
After losing the toss, Horwood were asked to bat first and openers Stuart Parker and Willett got on top from the off as they added a partnership of 50 in the first 10 overs before Parker was caught for 29 from 31 balls.
Two wickets quickly followed but a partnership of 73 between Willett and Glyn Davies (24 from 36) took the score up to 135-4 when Davies was caught.
Willett then increased the scoring rate as he reached his 100 and found useful support from Olly Prendergast (15) and Chris Mcstraw (12 not out) as Horwood ended their innings on 238-6 with Willett finishing 125 not out from 143 balls.
In reply Horwood’s opening bowling partnership of Josh Nix and Adam Armitage were far too good for the Stonesfield top order as the pair blitzed through in a high quality spell of bowling as Stonesfield were in disarray at 30-7 after 16 overs. Nix finished taking five wickets and Armitage two with all seven victims being bowled.
Stonesfield did manage to finally get a partnership together after the two openers had been removed from the attack and it took Horwood a further 25 overs to pick up the final three wickets as the Stonesfield lower order to their credit showed some resistance. The game was eventually wrapped up though with Stonesfield all out for 177 in the 41st over to give Horwood an excellent full thirty points. Nix finished with 5-25 and Armitage 2-22.
Next weekend Horwood are without a fixture Saturday but instead play host to Yarnton & Cowley on Sunday at Nash Road. 1:30 start.
