2019 Buckingham Advertiser Cup Winners – Preston Bissett

Preston Bissett lifted the Buckingham Advertiser Cup on Wednesday evening at a very hot & humid Bourton Road to complete a hugely successful season where they were also crowned the Buckingham Mid-Week League Champions. The top two sides in the league competed for the annual Advertiser Cup in a fifteen overs fixture, Preston batting first set the league runners-up a target of one hundred & twelve to win, thanks in main to an impressive fifty-six from Adam Bone, whilst in reply openers Stuart Leonard & Scott Reynolds got their side off to a good start however as the wickets fell and the runs dried up they fell just ten runs short of their opponents total.

Adam Bone made 56 for Preston Bissett

Bone opened alongside Harin Sellahewa who was run out with just eight runs on the scoreboard, Edward Selby Lowndes came to the crease and despite only making four runs himself he helped Bone get the score up to thirty-six before he was caught. George King then paired up with Bone and their partnership was worth forty-four which saw the opener pass his half century before eventually falling to Tom Leonard, King went on to make an unbeaten thirty-one alongside Ryan Watson who ended six not out.

Stuart Leonard & Scott Reynolds started well for Marsh Gibbon

Gibbon got their reply off to a flying start through Leonards & Reynolds who ticked along to fifty-seven before the latter was caught behind for twenty-one, Paul Thornton came in and made eleven before he was run out, Bone removed Reynolds stump with his score on thirty-one & Luke Fox was run out for eleven, Tom Leonard was also ran out and as the runs dried up through the middle order Bissett were able to lift the silverware at the end of a very hot evening.

League Shield Final: Great Horwood v Marsh Gibbon

Great Horwood vs Marsh Gibbon – Friday 10th July Venue: Great Horwood Cricket Club

Great Horwood CC prepare for their second Mid-Week final when they go up against Mid-Week rivals Marsh Gibbon. The two teams met in last month’s Advertiser Cup final where Horwood were eventual winners after a thrilling tie.

Horwood head into the game after an impressive start to the mid-week campaign and so far an unbeaten one. Skipper McStraw knows however that Marsh will be up for a fight and will want to return the favour in Great Horwood on Friday.

With a consistent team being the key to McStraw’s success in the previous cup final he names the same squad bar one player:

Great Horwood XI:

Chris McStraw©
Adam Armitage
Dale Armitage
Matt Armitage
Josh Nix
Haydon Morrison
Ian McStraw
Olly Pendergast
Jack Trundell
Andrew Ellison
Toby Slade

Great Horwood Cricket Club would like to invite followers of Sports Shots and local fans of cricket up to the final and will have a BBQ and Bar Open from 6:00pm. (Recreation Ground, Nash Road, Great Horwood, Milton Keynes, MK17 0RA)

Having won the toss Horwood elected to bat first on a good hard wicket. Starting with a bang Horwood scored 20 off the first over to calm the nerves. Horwood were scoring freely until Morrison (6) fell in the fourth over with the score at 39-1, Horwood were struck with another blow when Armitage (22) in the next over leaving Horwood on 40-2. Nix and I McStraw began rebuilding the innings and put on 30 before Nix (8) became the 3rd Horwood casualty. Horwood were fortunate that I McStraw was able to steady the ship and score a quick and potential match winning score of 32 before falling in the 10th over. Marsh were pegging Horwood back after a quick start but thanks to some quick and lusty blows from A Armitage (12) and Pendergast (15*) Horwood were able to reach a competitive 127-7 from their 15 Overs.

Marsh began their chase with Vadivale and S Leonard who in true fashion started quickly and pushed 1’s 2’s and the odd boundary. Horwood got their breakthrough in the fifth over when Haydon Morrison’s spin was introduced to the game and Leonard (7) was caught by Josh Nix. With the score at 24-1 Marsh were still in control thanks to wickets in hand. Horwood picked up their second wicket again courtesy of Morrison’s spin when Vadivale (18) was caught by Jack Trundell. Marsh began re-building after losing 2 wickets and began scoring freely thanks to Wallace and Turner. Marsh’s 3rd wicket partnership put on a quick 59 before Turner (31) was bowled by Nix in the 13th over. Marsh Gibbons captain Joe Leonard came to the crease with both teams fancying their chances. Wallace and Leonard pushed singles and 2’s and put away the bad ball until Leonard(4) fell in the last over with the score 116-4. Marsh however could not finish the game and fell 8 runs short to cap off an exciting final. (Special mention to A Wallace who carried his bat and finished unbeaten on 43).

Horwood can now look forward to another Cup final with Marsh Gibbon after both teams won their respective groups to progress into next Fridays Cup final. The match will be played at Great Horwood CC (6:30PM) – Bar and BBQ will be open to both spectators and players.
