A 90th minute goal by Jack Read saw Buckingham Athletic held in their Spartan South Midlands League, Division 1 clash at Chesham United last night.
Read’s late equaliser denied Damien Wiffin’s side all three points and their opening win of the season.
Earlier in the game, Phil Martin scored in his second league game in succession as the prolific Athletic striker found the net in the third minute to put his side ahead.
The Athletic now play host to Harpenden Town this saturday at Stratford Fields.
Many thanks to Matt Walker for the details.
Drew Mitten struck four goals as Winslow United defeated neighbours Stony Stratford Town 5-1 in the Spartan South Midlands League derby clash tonight.
Mitten’s finishing was clinical as United took three points against a side who did the double over them last season.
Despite having conceded ten goals at Sun Postal Sports on Saturday, Stony started the game brightly and looked far from a side lacking confidence.
With one of the home side’s opening attacks it was Mitten who fired home but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Mitten was soon on the scoresheet as he headed home after skipper Vinny Shrieves was strong in the air to set up his fellow striker on 13 minutes.
United’s keeper Owusu Boeteng was then helped off injured and youngster Jamie Day took his place between the sticks.
On 24 minutes United had an early contender for goal of the season. Mitten picked up the ball and from thirty yards out unleashed an unstoppable shot which flew into the bottom left hand corner to double the home side’s advantage.
Four minutes later Mitten was played in and he showed composure to calmly lob the visiting keeper to claim his hat-trick.
A long range effort was tipped onto the bar by United’s substitute keeper Day and the rebound saw him pounce on the loose ball.
Sam Callear’s young side kept battling under skipper Kyle Stimpson for the visitors.
On 72 minutes Mitten struck his fourth goal of the night as he fired home after latching onto a Vinny Shrieves knockdown.
Stony’s pace up front always looked a threat and it was Deano Bailey-Browne whose driving run down the left flank saw him produce an excellent finish with nine minutes remaining.
Late in the game Hateley Mercer’s left footed free kick found substitute Liam Gallagher, who had drifted into the box, and he glanced a header past the visiting keeper.

Stony manager Sam Callear told Sports Shots “We are looking forward to the game and we hope to be considerably more competitive than we were on Saturday.”

Chris Mullis’ second string recorded a 6-3 success.
Winslow United suffered a 0-2 defeat at Harpenden Town in the Spartan South Midlands Football league, Division 1 opening game today.
The visitors saw Drew Mitten shoot wide after he latched on to a Vinny Shrieves flick-on but it was Harpenden who took the lead when their centre forward slotted the ball under Owusu Boeteng.
Losing at the break, Mitten and Liam Gallagher both went close before Boeteng produced a fantastic save from a Harpenden free kick.
The home side doubled their advantage late in the game as their striker ran through and squared the ball to his team mate, who fired home.
