SNCL,D3: Gawcott head to Braunston after ‘Fin’-ishing off Crown for first victory

Gawcott & Hillesden head to Braunston hoping to build upon their positive start to the season tomorrow.

Alex Piggott

Skipper Alex Piggott commented:

After a tough and frustrating few weeks of the season that saw our first game called off, then we suffered a one-wicket defeat to Winslow, then a game abandoned at tea after bowling the opposition out for 57.

With the weather starting to pick up we were all looking forward to playing against Crown.

After winning the toss Crown decided to have a bat and at one stage at 115-3, with plenty of overs left, Gawcott were facing a hefty run chase.

It was youngster Finley Clark who was brought on to bowl and he produced a fine spell to remove both the batsmen, that looked settled,  backed up by the other bowlers and some great fielding. We managed to bowl Crown all out for 153.

Finley Clark

We knew if they batted well on a decent batting track they could chase these down, which they did with 2.3 overs left largely to a partnership of 70 from myself and Kyle Bennion.

Kyle Bennion

Then a great knock at the end by Matt Folkes and Jonny Dale earning us the first win of the season and 20 points.

Gawcott were again left frustrated as the weather wiped out their South Northants Cricket League, division 3 fixture against Gayton with the home side in command. Gayton had been restricted to 59 all out with Matt Folkes doing the damage with four for 5.

Piggott told Sports Shots:

It’s been a frustrating start to the season but I would like to thank every one of my players for their commitment and attitude, it has been fantastic.

All I have heard is people giving their full-support to each other and we want to keep this going throughout the season.

SNCL,D3: Folkes put Gawcott on top before rain halts their quest for opening win

Matt Folkes devastating spell of bowling put Gawcott & Hillesden on top before heavy rain at tea stopped their quest for an season-opening victory against Gayton at the Richard Roper Field on Saturday afternoon.

Matt Folkes

A spell of good bowling and fielding had put Alex Piggott’s side in the driving seat with opener Colin Piggott picking up three for 11.

Kyle Bennion and Findley Clark kept plugging away as the visitors were finding runs hard to come by.

The introduction of the slow left arm of Matt Folkes saw Gayton’s innings come to a quick end as they were dismissed for just 59. Folkes finishing with very impressive figures of four for 9.

Moments after the end of the innings, with tea taken, the rain came to finish the game.

Gawcott & Hillesden CCC – 2017 Cup final squad

Matt Folkes produced an excellent all-round display for the holders but Gawcott & Hillesden were unable to repeat their exploits of twelve months earlier.

Gawcott & Hillesden celebrate a wicket!

After winning the toss, Gawcott & Hillesden skipper Alex Piggott invited his opponents to bat on a very damp track on a drying afternoon of bright sunshine with a strong breeze.

The captain’s decision was justified as Colin Piggott picked up a caught and bowled with the opening and final ball of the first over while Jonny Dale also took a return catch from his own bowling leaving the visitors 8 for 3 from a lively opening eight deliveries of the final.

Gayton skipper Drew Blundell (30) struck some lusty blows while Cameron Waldron played the anchor role.

Gawcott & Hillesden celebrate a wicket!

Matt Folkes picked up two wickets, one courtesy of a smart leg side take by Luke Richardson, before, in a critical stage of the game, Gawcott & Hillesden lost their way in the final five overs of the Gayton innings as their opponents smashed 54 runs.

When the teams came in Waldron was unbeaten on 91 not out as his side registered 165 for 8 from their 20 overs, including 20 extras.

Colin Piggott three for 39 from five overs the pick of Gawcott & Hillesden’s bowling.

In reply, Alex Piggott and John Patterson started well before the skipper was castled for eight.

John Bobsin bowled a tidy spell for Gayton as the holders slowly saw the run rate edge up. With gambles being taken Colin Piggott (17) fell to a catch in the deep attempting to force the pace.

Patterson and Folkes kept Gawcott & Hillesden in with a chance with some good running between the wickets and some powerful hitting.

The excellent Patterson (41) was unfortunate to be dismissed to a delivery that shot along the ground, giving him no chance.
