Matt Folkes produced an excellent all-round display for the holders but Gawcott & Hillesden were unable to repeat their exploits of twelve months earlier.

Gawcott & Hillesden celebrate a wicket!

After winning the toss, Gawcott & Hillesden skipper Alex Piggott invited his opponents to bat on a very damp track on a drying afternoon of bright sunshine with a strong breeze.

The captain’s decision was justified as Colin Piggott picked up a caught and bowled with the opening and final ball of the first over while Jonny Dale also took a return catch from his own bowling leaving the visitors 8 for 3 from a lively opening eight deliveries of the final.

Gayton skipper Drew Blundell (30) struck some lusty blows while Cameron Waldron played the anchor role.

Matt Folkes picked up two wickets, one courtesy of a smart leg side take by Luke Richardson, before, in a critical stage of the game, Gawcott & Hillesden lost their way in the final five overs of the Gayton innings as their opponents smashed 54 runs.

When the teams came in Waldron was unbeaten on 91 not out as his side registered 165 for 8 from their 20 overs, including 20 extras.

Colin Piggott three for 39 from five overs the pick of Gawcott & Hillesden’s bowling.

In reply, Alex Piggott and John Patterson started well before the skipper was castled for eight.

John Bobsin bowled a tidy spell for Gayton as the holders slowly saw the run rate edge up. With gambles being taken Colin Piggott (17) fell to a catch in the deep attempting to force the pace.

Patterson and Folkes kept Gawcott & Hillesden in with a chance with some good running between the wickets and some powerful hitting.

The excellent Patterson (41) was unfortunate to be dismissed to a delivery that shot along the ground, giving him no chance.

Folkes (53) continued the Gawcott & Hillesden fight as he struck two sixes before reaching a fine half century. He was finally out, bowled, in his best-ever knock for the club.

SNCL,D3/4 Cup Final: Gawcott & Hillesden triumph by 29 runs!

Gawcott & Hillesden Combined Cricket Club lifted the South Northants Cricket League, Division 3 & 4 Cup after defeating Chipping Warden by 29 runs on Sunday afternoon.

Batting first, Gawcott & Hillesden started positively when skipper Alex Piggott and John Patterson got their side off to the ideal start. Patterson (17) was first to fall but with over forty runs on the ball in the sixth over he had done his job.

Alex Piggott (20) was run out after a good knock before his brother Colin (22) kept the visitors early momentum going.

The middle order all looked to keep the run rate going but it was James Carlin who smashed a quickfire 21 to put Gawcott & Hillesden in a strong position as they closed on 132 for 8.

The visitors carried their positive display onto the field as opening bowlers Colin Piggott and Luke Stafford bowled tight spells, backed up by some excellent fielding as Gawcott & Hillesden raised their game.

Stafford bowled out his five overs taking one for 17, while Carlin completed a good five overs of left arm spin with one for 29.

Piggott returned to match his opening partners figures of one for 17 from five overs, but it was Jonny Dale who took late wickets, including an outstanding caught and bowled, to finish with four for 36 from his allotted five overs.

Warden’s Buttron picked up the man of the match award for his 46 not out but it was Alex Piggott who was handed the trophy as Gawcott & Hillesden’s excellent team display won through.
